American Sign Language (ASL) Staff Interpreter

Are you known for your flexibility and attention to detail.  If so, Aspire Indiana is currently looking for a part-time (minimum 20 hours/week) American Sign Language (ASL) Staff Interpreter to join our Deaf Services Team.

Position Summary

As an ASL Staff Interpreter you will interpret for deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing clients, families and staff in clinical and/or administrative settings, and to hearing individuals when they are communicating with deaf or hard of hearing staff and/or clients.  The Staff Interpreter will also be responsible for coordinating schedules of interpreting staff, scheduling with agencies for freelance interpreters, if needed, providing instruction in the use of adaptive equipment, and any other duties as assigned.  

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required; Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or related field higly preferred

Experience

  • Ability to effectively communicate with hearing individuals and in American Sign Language (ASL) with deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing individuals required
  • Strong understanding of deaf culture and resources related to deafness and interpreter standards required
  • Mental Health, substance use treatment center and/or medical office setting experience highly preferred; understanding of the behavioral health field, a plus

Certification

  • RID is highly preferred or any state certification in ASL Interpreting or Interpreter Training Program highly recommended

Other

  • Strong ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle highly confidential information with professionalism
  • Must adhere to the RID Interpreter Code of Ethics
  • Must be able to use appropriate industry terminology, have excellent listening, retention and presentation skills
  • Must have the ability to work and effectively deal with multiple types of personalities in a variety of situations
  • Must hve the skill to communicate anywhere between Minimal Language Skills to American Sign Language to any form of sign language
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel between Aspire locations
  • Must maintain a valide driver's license, current automobile insurance and a driving record that meets the guidelines and requirements of the organization

Employment is contingent on background checks as required by Aspires policies which may include: Drug Test, Criminal History, Sex Offender Registry Search, State Central Registry Check, Employment Verification, Education Verification, and Professional References
